The hectic lives we lead, and the stress that's an
accepted part of our lives today, makes it almost essential
for us to turn to music and songs to lighten the mood at the
end of the day.
All over the world there are literally hundreds of
cultures. And what's interesting is that almost all the
cultures have one thing in common: songs are almost always
an integral part of everyday life.
Of course the style of the songs, the words used in the
songs etc differ in each culture. But one common this across
all the cultures is that most lives are permeated with
songs.
Songs have a function in society, which is much beyond the
purpose of providing simple entertainment. Of course songs
are written to entertain, but they are also meant to teach,
encourage, mourn, and heal.
Songs serve a social function. They do play the role of
helping to strengthen the circle of society. It forms a way
for deepening the connection between people. Songs help in
forming and cementing a bond between people, who have come
together for various reasons, be it casual or profound.
There are many forms of the songs. One of the forms is
referred to as Cross- rhythm. This refers to the accents of
a song that come just after the accents of an accompanying
rhythmic instrument or any other rhythmic device.
This rhythmic device could be anything ranging from hand
clapping or foot-stamping. Cross rhythm is also called
syncopation, in a simplified form.
The Call and Response form of singing is a choral form in
which the leader of the singing group sings, or speaks, a
line. This line is then echoed, and perhaps expanded upon,
by the larger and the remaining part of the group. This form
of singing Call and Response works well between two groups.
